8 Important WordPress Settings to do After Installing a Blog

1. Delete Default Post, Page and Comment

When you install a New WordPress Blog, it includes a Default Page, Post and Comment which have no relevance to your blog niche. So the first thing that you should do right after new blog installation is to delete this default post, page and comment by following these simple steps:-

  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Posts > All Posts and delete/trash the default “Hello world” post.
  • In the same way, go to Pages > All Pages and delete/trash the default “Sample Page”.
  • And lastly, Go to “Comments” section from dashboard and delete/trash the default comment.

2. Change the Site Title, Tagline and Time Zone

The Next Important Change that you need to perform is changing the WordPress Site Title, Tagline and Timezone. Please note that Changing Site Title and Tagline is very crucial because this is what show up in Google Search Engine.

To make these changes, simply go to your Settings > General. Change both your site title and tagline to something that relates to your site topic.

Now comes the part of changing Timezone according to your location. This is equally important to show the most accurate date on your Blog, and it also helps with scheduling posts.

The Timezone Settings are found in the same place: Settings > General. In general settings, Go to Timezone Section. You can choose a city that is in the same time zone as you live in or set by UTC. 3. Change Permalink Structure

The third crucial change that comes in the List of Most Important WordPress Settings is Changing Permalink Structures. Because Sadly, the default permalink structure in WordPress i.e the URL structure that comes on the end of your blog name is not very Google friendly.

The default WordPress permalink structure is – http://yourdomain.com/p=123.

This permalink is short, but not friendly for search engines. To switch to better permalink structure, Follow this simple step.

Go to Settings > Permalink and select “Post name” Permalink Structure

Click “Save”.

Now, when your Blog’s URLs appear in search engines, some of the keywords will be visible in the URL of your blog post search result. This will boost up your SEO Score and will help you to rank higher and get more organic traffic.

4. Blog’s Reading Settings

You can also configure reading settings of your blog and control what the home page of your blog display. This option is great if you need to have a custom homepage according to your choice. By default, WordPress Set Home Page displays your latest posts in chronological order. But with custom homepage you can have a separate page to display all your blog posts.

To Change Reading Settings, Head Over to Settings > Reading.

Here you can make a choice if you need your blog’s home page to show your latest posts or if you want to use your own custom page. After changing your reading settings, save your changes. You can always change this one later also.

5. Delete Unused Themes

Next thing to do is deleting the themes that you are not using. Because Majority of us, will install and test a few themes before deciding the final one to keep. After selecting and installing your desired theme, you must delete unused theme because the themes which are not used will also need updates.

Leaving unused themes can create the unnecessary chore of updating them. If you do not update those unused themes, it can create a hazard to your website safety as it can give hackers a way in.

Instead of putting your site at risk, you can simply delete these themes.

To Delete a unused theme, go to Appearance, and then go to themes. To delete a theme, you need to hover over it and select Theme Details. After that, a window will open from where you can find the option to delete the theme.

6. Media Settings

By default, WordPress create multiple sizes for every uploaded picture. This in-fact is not a good practice because it will load up your site with unnecessary multiple useless files and your wordpress blog will quickly become bloated.

To avoid this simply Go to Settings > Media, and use the below screenshot to configure the proper settings:

Before you start working on your blog, it is important to install important WordPress Plugins that will ease up your work and will improve the performance of site.

You can install any of one of these plugins.
  • Anti-Spam Plugin: Spam Comments are big headache for many website owners. They not only irritate you but are also bad for SEO. To prevent your website against such spammy comments, you can install a plugin like Akismet Anti-Spam.
  • Jetpack Plugin: Jetpack is the one plugin I cannot run my site without. It is ultimate toolkit for bloggers from related posts, share buttons, publicize, social media icons, subscription, to site stats, you will love Jetpack too.
  • SEO Plugin: Search Engine Optimization is an important part of any website. To ensure that your blog posts are getting maximum organic traffic from search engines, you need to optimize them using a SEO plugin. A top most choice for many webmasters is the Yoast SEO. You will find its interface very easy to use and you can even generate an XML sitemap with the click of the mouse.
  • Analytics Plugin: It helps you to track your site. The Widely used plugin is Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights. This plugin allow you to link your website with Google Analytics Console, so you can see how users find and use your website, so you can keep them coming back. On Google Analytics you can see Online Users on your website, Location of Visitors, Performance of your Blog Posts, Audience Behaviour and much more.
